The Burning Rose
Author W. K. Hayes
The Burning Rose
The Burning Rose is a flower seated in the middle of circle
Where its fire burns in colors of deep blue and bright purple
The Rose, itself, remains unharmed by the touch of the flame
The one of my desires that, I will never be able to claim
Blood red petals represent the love of the rose’s heart
Growing up from a ground of gold never to pulled apart
No thorn may grow on it, only soft green leaves and a stem
For it holds my one true love that may never, ever begin
Fairies slowly dance in a circle around the Burning Rose
Sprinkling magic upon it and watching as the flower grows.
Little Faeries, one by one, watch over the flower like the sun
I can only watch and wonder what magic have they begun
Springing forth and standing upon the ground of gold
I watched in amazement as the petals began to unfold
Stepping forth like a goddess released from a spell
You came out of the flower as the burning petals fell
A fairy flies to me and whispers closely to my ear,
“Go unto her with your love and do so without fear.”
I stepped forward to reveal that I have watched you for a time
But, someone of such exquisite beauty could never be mine
You saw my heart bared before you and gave me a kiss
Not a kiss of passion but one set, upon my lips
You simply leaned over and kissed me on my cheek
As I waited patiently hoping that you would soon speak
Finally, the words came forth like drops of rain
Words of despair meant to ease this woeful pain
“My time is short for I am the flower of eternity
Guarded by the flame that shall never burn me”
“The fairies saw your heart and gave you, your desire,
But, I am afraid that even you may never pick this flower”
I thought about your words and what they meant to me
Your voice is so melodic, arousing, and full of ecstasy
A tear fell from my face for this love I have lost
“Surely there must be a way no matter what the cost.”
I was desperate to cling to you and hold you forevermore
But, who can hold Eternity as the tears began to pour
You looked upon me with eyes filled with sadness and sorrow
For, today was our only day for which there’s no tomorrow
“Seize the moment,” the mind yelled from deep-down inside
Still, the exhortation of my feelings I knew I must hide.
You kissed me softly upon my lips and returned to middle ground
Where I watched, the petals cover you as you returned to where you were found
I ran to garnish you with yet one more, small kiss
But, the fire that does not burn you, scorched my very lips
Falling backwards to the ground and holding tight my mouth
Like unto a five year old I sat there and began to pout
The fairies circled me and hummed a sorrowful tune
How can I walk away from the woman that is my Sun, Stars, and Moon?
Nighttime fell and the fairies began to fly away
Red lit skies appeared overhead and covered the light of day
Alone, I sat there and watched you as I had watched you before
Knowing that the flame that does not burn is, my love, forevermore
I will love you without the thought of the passing time
For all of my, life I will love you without reason, sense, or rhyme
You have taken this heart and with you it shall stay
Because I know that, I had loved you long before this day
